MRT is a non-profit professional theater company dedicated to theater as an art form rather than a commercial enterprise. It is one of just 74 theaters nationwide with membership in LORT (the League of Resident Theatres), the organization representing America’s leading professional theater companies. It is one of only nine LORT theaters in New England (one of just three in Massachusetts) and the only one serving Northeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.
Now in its 34th Season, MRT has been under the artistic direction of Charles Towers since 2001 and has become known for its productions of mostly regional and world premieres, underscoring the company’s commitment to creating “vibrant contemporary theater for a vibrant contemporary audience.”
Acknowledging that artists are at the core of all creative work, MRT emphasizes quality over size, stretching its limited budgets to hire the best-available professional directors, designers, and actors, who are attracted to Lowell from major theatre centers due to the company’s reputation for its unwavering commitment to the highest artistic standards. Here, these theater artists form creative teams, making each production from scratch as a unique artistic creation.
By bringing plays of substance to vibrant life, MRT strives to make a genuine contribution to the cultural, intellectual, and emotional health of its region. MRT’s primary mission is “to advance the cause of human understanding through the art of theater.” Believing that the Arts have intrinsic value on their own, MRT strives to make its community a better place in which to live by producing works of theatrical art that advance a literate examination of human relationship while building empathy for ourselves and others. This service is endorsed by MRT’s non-profit status, and recognized by grants from federal, state and city agencies, national and local foundations, and by contributions from businesses and individuals throughout the region. These donations enable MRT to keep tickets as affordable as possible for the whole community.
As a part of Massachusetts’ “Creative Economy,” MRT also strives to enhance the economic health of Lowell and the surrounding region, and to support the continued growth of America’s theatrical heritage by regularly producing the works of living playwrights. The company is proud to make its home in a city with a legacy of creativity and craftsmanship; whose motto is “Art is the Handmaid of Human Good.”
